Solution Of Assignment No.2 (Course STA301) Fall 2012

Solution Of Assignment No.2 (Course STA301) Fall 2012

Question 1:

A)The fourth mean moment of a symmetric distribution is 243. What would be the value of the standard deviation in order that the distribution may be meso-kurtic?

SOLUTION:-
Standard is equal to 2nd moment
We are that m4 = 243 . Therefore
m4 = 243
m4/m2 = b3 = 3  i.e   = 243/m2^2 = 3
or 243/3 = 81 or m2 = 9
Standard deviation is equal to m  2nd moment

B)Two candidates X and Y at the B.A (Hons.) Examination obtained the following data.

Candidate X Candidate Y
 = 43.2 =        20.5
S.D = 24.25   S.D = 15.6
Which of the candidate showed a more consistent performance?
SOLUTION:-
By calculating the co-efficient of variation in each case.
Candidate A
C V = s/x * 100
C V = 24.25/43.2 * 100
C V = 56.13%
Candidate B
C V = s/y * 100
C V = 15.6/20.5*100
C V = 76.097%

We see that coefficient of variation for the candidate A smaller than that for the
candidate B.Hence candidate A is more consistent than candidate B

Question 2:

A)If coefficient of skewness = 0, then what would you say about the shape of the distribution?
SOLUTION:-
For symmetric distributions or curves, the coefficient is zero. The shape is symmetric
B)The following data were computed from personnel records of a manufacturing firm:
             X = Number of years of service
            Y = weekly wage rate
          n = 23; ∑X = 2433; ∑Y = 4254, ∑   = 281019;   = 841786 and  = 482788
 If the correlation coefficient indicates that there does exist a relationship between X and Y,                                    compute the least squares line of regression Y = a + b X.
SOLUTION:-
Where bxy = n (XY)-(X)(Y) / n (X^2)-(X)^2

bxy = 23(482788) (2433)(4254) / 23(281019) (2433)^2
bxy = 11104124-10349982 / 6463437-5919489
bxy = 754142/543948
b     = 1.3864
a     = y-bx

y   = ¥y/n =
4254/23 =
184.96

x  =
¥x/n =
2433/23 = 105.78

a = 184.96-1.39(105.78)
a = 184.96-147.0342
a = 37.92
Hence
y  = 37.92+1.39X
Is estimated regression equation appropriate for predicting the no
of years (x) given weekly wage rate

ECO402 Microeconomics Assignment 1 Solution Fall 2012

The Case:
Agriculture is the backbone of a number of economies, like Pakistan, India, China and others. The expansion of fertilizer’s production, mechanization and pesticides is considered as a significant factor to enhance the growth of agricultural sector in these countries. Here we will take the case of Pakistan.
Pakistan is a major exporter of rice and cotton. Suppose Pakistan is expecting bumper rice, cotton and sugarcane crops this year. By far, this situation will fluctuate price, demand and supply of these commodities in domestic and international market.
Hypothetical data of quantity supplied (Qs) and quantity demanded (Qd) of rice in domestic market and international market for two years is given
below.
  2010                                                          2011
    Price          Qd                  Qs                 Price         Qd            Qs
(per kg)      (per kg)        (per kg)            (per kg)    (per kg)    (per kg)
Domestic market              20         1880              1780                  15            1910       1710
International market          21         4000              3450                  17            4050       7100
In the international market, the demand for rice is increasing day by day because of two main reasons, firstly population of the world is growing with 1.7% per year; secondly it is used as biofuel. The demand and supply equations of rice in domestic market are Qd = 2000- 6P and Qs = 1500 + 14P respectively. With the help of above data, solve questions given below.
Requirements:
a) Find the equilibrium price and equilibrium quantity of rice in domestic market.
b) How much quantity demanded of rice will be affected as a result of decrease in price of rice from Rs.20 to Rs.15 per kg in the domestic market? (Give your answer after calculating price elasticity of demand)
c) How much quantity supplied of rice will be affected as a result of decrease in price of rice from Rs.20 to Rs.15 per kg in the domestic market? (Give your answer after calculating price elasticity of supply)
d) If rice is not used in biofuel, how would this situation affect the price and quantity sold of rice in domestic market? Indicate graphically.                                                              (Marks = 5+5+5+5)

MGT211 Introduction To Business Assignment 1 Solution Fall 2012

Corporate Social Responsibility
Learning objectives: Create awareness that how business decisions might affect the interests of stakeholder groups.
Case:
Corporate social, ethical and environmental awareness has become essential for businesses. Companies are liable to consider the interests of all stakeholders while performing their activities and making decisions. Business operations should not be exclusively focused to meet the objectives of shareholders and investors; which is the maximization of profit. Corporate must adopt a wider perspective when setting their objectives. The concept of corporate social responsibility explains us to assess the social impact of a business; it covers pollution levels, usage of energy, reprocessing and recycling rates, contributions to community, employee benefit programs and customer satisfaction. Business operations and decisions may have positive and negative impact on customers, employees, suppliers, community and environment.
Some typical business decisions in real world are as follows:
a) A business is planning for large expansion by building a new factory.
b) Application of technology into production and business processes
c) Business uses solar energy to run some operations.
Requirement:
Being the student of business education, you are required to analyze the likely positive and negative effects of these decisions on employees, customers and society at large (community).

SOC101 Introduction to Sociology Assignment 1 Solution Fall 2012

On a cold winter day in 1983, a concerned socialworker paid a call to a farmhouse in rural Pennsylvania and found a five yearold girl hidden in a second floor storage room. The child, whose name was Susan, was stuck into an old chair with her arms tied above her head so that she could not move. She was dressed in only a few filthy garments, and her arms and legs were like matchsticks- so thin and weak that she could not use them. Due todomestic issues Susan was taken to a children’s home in a nearby city shortly after her birth. Susan’s mother was unable to pay for her care, so the child was moved from one’ stranger’s house to another for a period of several months. Finally, not yet six months of age, Susan was brought back tolive with her mother and grandfather.
At this point, Susan’s mother kept her in a room that resembled an attic, providing almost no attention and just enough milk to keep her alive. Because ofthe grandfather’s continuing hostility, Susan stayed in that room, with essentially no human contact, for five years. Susan did not speak, smile, laugh, or even show anger.
Keep in mind this case study and answer the following:
• Susan did not display any social characteristics that are commonly associated with human beings. How do you see the impact of this isolation on personality building of Susan? (5)

Answer:The impact of this isolation on personality building of Susan’s life is that she could not speak, smile, and laugh. Even she could not show her anger against hatred things or situation because she is an isolated girl. Also she couldn’t move because her arms and legs were immobile and at a halt.

• Critically analyze the reasons behind such apathetic condition of Susan. (5)

Answer: The reasons behind such apathetic condition of Susan were domestic issues. Her mother was not caring her. Nor she gives her (Susan) healthy food except milk. Susan was kept in a room that was being similar to garret. Her interaction with the society is negligible and this is a big reason in her isolation because the role of socialization in personality development is very important in one’s life.

• Do you think “Susan was an object rather than a person”? Justify with strong argument.(5)

Answer: I think, Yes “Susan was an object rather than a person” because she did not speak, smile, laugh, or even show anger. She could not use or move her hands, arms and legs because she is very weak.
